LINUX / LOCAL COMMAND BUILDER
Linux permissions calculator
Convert octal permissions to rwx notation and build quoted GNU/Linux chmod and chown commands. This tool does not access files or run commands.
Permissions and target
Set a mode and build the commands.
Permission meaning
- Octal mode
- ls-style notation
- Owner rights
- Group rights
- Other-user rights
- Special bits
GNU/Linux commands
Apply chown first when requested, then choose one chmod form. The numeric = prefix explicitly sets all mode bits, including clearing directory SUID/SGID bits. Commands affect one path and are not recursive.
No ownership change requested.
How to use these permissions
Enter an octal mode or select read, write and execute bits for each class. Choose file or directory, enter a path, and optionally request an owner or group change. Build the result, review its rwx notation, then copy a command. File modes do not describe ACL entries, filesystem attributes or effective access through parent directories.
For directories, read lists names, write permits changes to entries and execute allows traversal. SGID commonly preserves the directory group for new entries; sticky restricts removal and renaming by unprivileged users. SUID/SGID execution behavior depends on the filesystem, mount policy and program type. chown can clear these bits, so ownership is applied before chmod.
